Predominantly young and mid-life couples may not be on high incomes but they’re confident in their ability to make ends meet. Although the majority of them are employed, often in agriculture and semi-skilled jobs, there is an above-average incidence of retired and non-working people in this group too.
Walk with Me
Today is Monday and I must take a chicken to the grave sight of my mother. As a Makassarese I do this once a year as an offering to the “arwah” of my mother. It’s been a tough year with El Nino affecting the harvest. That of course has a direct impact on my income. No bonus. I have worked these paddy fields at the foot of Gunung Lompobatang ever since I was a child. This generation of the traditional owners are nice people but even they cannot control the climate.
There is no doubt the climate is changing so I hope my mother will bring me luck InsyaAllah.. I have to save the money to buy another cow. Milking two will not be too much work for Retnari. Without supplementing the income we may have to struggle too much in the years ahead. There will still be a few years before Budi can start earning.
Next Thursday is the festival to mark the beginning of the planting season and the whole kampung will be there. Little Rini will join the other girls to sing dangdut.
